With just a week to go to Hallowe'en, Derry is getting ready for one of the bumper weekends of the year when large numbers of visitors will join local people in enjoying the host of events organised as part of the city's Hallowe'en Carnival.
One of the downsides of the Hallowe’en celebrations over the years has been the over indulgence of alcohol, especially among young people. This year local organisation DIVERT is making an all out effort to combat the abuse of alcohol by teenagers at
Hallowe’en through its ‘All Treats No Tricks’ campaign. On Halloween night, a team of 20 volunteers from DIVERT will be taking to the streets of Derry in an effort to reduce the risk of drink fuelled anti-social activities. From a special mobile unit, DIVERT staff and volunteers will distribute bottled water, personal safety alarms and anti drink spiking devices in the city centre and other areas to try and make it a safe night for young people and promote a sensible attitude to drinking. DIVERT has also been visiting local schools over the last few weeks giving workshops highlighting the dangers associated with underage drinking. This hands on approach to tackling the problem of alcohol and young people at Hallowe’en is definitely a step in the right direction and must be commended. Let's hope the city's young people will take the advice on board and make it ‘All Treats And No Tricks this Hallowe’en.
