Traffic congestion is an increasing problem on Derry's roads.
Despite the long tailbacks on major routes, the expense of parking and worries over pollution caused by vehicle emissions, it would appear more and more people are choosing to drive, especially to work.
There is a noticeable and frustrating gridlock on many roads. Surely it is time serious consideration was given to a plan to transform Derry into a city for people rather than cars.
Is it not government policy to encourage people out of their cars and on to public transport?
Some suggest introducing a levy on motorists who commute into the city centre.
A levy - which would, no doubt, prove controversial and highly unpopular - cannot be ruled out, but it should be regarded as a last resort by the authorities.
What the motorist must have is an attractive alternative to the convenience of the car and this means efficient, value-for-money, regular and reliable public transport.
